Ezekiel 1:12 (KJV)
“And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.”
In the spirit there are no side-ways or backing up, there is only “straight forward.” This does not mean we cannot move up, down, East, West, South, or North; whither the spirit goes is where we go and when we do it is always straight forward.
Jesus said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is... the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).
By faith Peter walked on the water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. Consequently, the trip out to Jesus was a faith walk; the trip back was a fellowship walk. Jesus calls us to walk in faith; if our faith should fail us as it did Peter, Jesus will always extend His hand to increase our fellowship by walking us back to where we first believed.
Walking in the spirit is always obedience (straight forward). God never rebukes His children for walking in faith, and as we do He will never condemn us when we’re caught off guard. When they were back in the boat Jesus did not ask, where did you fail? He asked Peter, where did your faith fail you?
There are no detours walking in the spirit. It is straight forward regardless of what direction it takes us. This is how Ezekiel’s creature navigates and it is how we must. No alternatives, no options, and no exceptions, only straight forward.
